Earth Day
Ideas for Change
Our Earthday group on flickr
Since the first Earth Day in 1970, people around the world have been creating their own ways to celebrate Earth, to observe the beauty and vitality of nature-and to renew their commitment to saving our living planet.
Thank you to all those who shared what they are doing and for posting photos on the WWF Earth Day Flickr gallery.
For Earth Day I spent as much time outside as possible - meaning all my lights and tv were off. I planted a tree and some other plants and made a design of where to plant a garden once the weather warms up.

I am going to clean up the lake that is near my house by picking up trash that is in it and around it. And I was wondering since I am only 7 years old and in first grade, I want to help the Earth since I care about it so I was wondering if you would like to help me? If you have any more ideas I would love you to share them with me so I can try to help the Earth, too. I love doing this for the Earth.

I have film cannister containers that each have a plastic grocery bag in them. They fit in my pocket easier than the whole plastic bag. I am going to try and carry one of these at all times and leave everywhere I go cleaner than when I arrived.

I am in nineth grade and in my school, we had a very poor recycling system. I found this was unexceptable. I went to the principle and talked with him about it, and he agreed. Now my school is recycling three times as much as before. Also, now we have a earth club, and we pick up garbage on the side of roads, and we even go through some bins in our school if we see paper [if they are not covered in something] and recycle it. It's our effect to help save the planet. Every friday the club meets and we do another activity to think of ways to help the earth. [:

Happy Earth Day! I am a first grade teacher, and my class planted a tree at the Village Hall in honor of Earth Day. We will also be attending an event called "Celebrate the Earth". We will join other schools at a local, public lake so that we can attend several different presentations about the Earth's natural resources, animals, and how we can help protect the Earth. "Celebrate the Earth" has become a yearly event for many of the schools in our area.

I don't drive - not just on Earth Day, but every day! I don't fly, either. I may drive/fly in the future, but for now, I know I'm doing much more than the average person to help clean up our planet. I also donated to a couple of very worthy envirnoment-related causes today, and helped clean up my college. Maybe next year I will do even better!

I use a shower saver showerhead that allows me to cut back the water while soaping up. I currently use CFL bulbs instead of standard incandesant bulbs, but am about to change over LEDs. They cost more, but use less than half of the CFL bulbs, or less than a 10th of regular bulbs (5 watts LED vs. 75 watts regular bulb). Recycle all possible products, reuse anything possible, eat organic, am starting a garden. I even use organic soap, shampoo, and shaving gel (dr. bronner's, excellent stuff) Attempting to become totally self-sufficient. My family and I are doing all of this in the hopes of preserving/improving quality of life.

I recycle paper at the office. I'm the only person who has a recycling bin, so some of my co-workers bring me piles of paper. They should have their own bin, but at least they're growing more conscious of all the waste of paper. Also,at work,we have events every weekend attended by hundreds of people. We give them bottles of water, most of which are simply thrown in the garbage cans after use. My goal is to get big recycling bins and educate the entire staff and public about how to correctly dispose of these bottles. At home, I'm trying to use candles instead of artificial light at least once a month. Also, when it rains, I'm placing buckets outside so I can use the accumulated water to wash my hair or clothes. Let's return to a more simple way of living. We can get used to it!

I am going to save the Earth by growing plants. I already bought plants from my older brother's school fair at Iolani, that was from April 18-20. These plants are still very small and delicate. I plan on asking my grandma for helpful hints on how to properly care for my new plants. I hope to save the Earth by providing more oxygen into our polluted world. I also bought a venus fly trap at the Iolani fair. The venus fly trap is still too small to eat any flies. I hope to use this plant to reduce the number of flies on our Earth. By doing this, I am saving Earth because there will be less insects flying around and irritating everyone. Hopefully when this plant gores older, it will also eat the mosquitoes. Mosqitoes only cause trouble for Earth and its people. They spread around nasty diseases like malaria. I also hope to save the Earth by picking up trash I see around my school, which is Sacred Hearts Academy. I would like to save the Earth and preserve it for future generations.

I work for a computer company where we are constantly running several hundred computers. I cannot control of those computers, but by completely shutting down my computer or turning off the monitor when I am away for a while helps reduce power usage. It doesn't end at the office, do the same thing at home. Unplug you appliances when not at home, try to spend more time outdoors, if you can't plant a tree try some herbs or flowering plants, never leave the water running, re-use paper and plastic bags, segregate your trash. My Personal Commitment is to keep on doing what I am doing and entice others to do the same. Small things done collectively will have a big impact.

I volunteered with EarthFair NY at Grand Central and I will be volunteering at the Green Expo at the Hilton. I'm greening my residence as well. I have a new indoor garden. I'm inquiring about arranging a community garden/farm (as none exist in my area) or using, perhaps sharing some yard space with the locals. I've eliminated all the chemicals cleaners and use only eco dry cleaners if necessary. I made eco spa products and soy candles. I support eco/green business/organizations as well. I'm a vegetarian. I use public transportation. It's a way of life for me in NYC. Every day is Earth Day in my book.

To honor Earth Day, I will be displaying my battery powered pickup at the Earth Day Fair & EXPO this Saturday, April 26 and reminding people that in 2006 the FAO of the UN said, (in their 409 page report, "Livestock's Long Shadow") that the best thing that we can do to reduce our Earth's global warming problem and reduce our air, water and soil pollution is for us to eat less animals!

All year long I make a large effort to help animals and the earth. I am very conscientious to buy products earth friendly and that DO NOT test on animals. I recycle at home, and even bring home loads of paper from my job (they do not recycle there) and recycle it at home or use the community recycling bins. My house only has energy efficient light bulbs, and all appliances I buy are energy star rated. On Earth Day this year - I am sending out an E-card to everyone on my address list with ideas on how to help! From recycling and conservation to planting gardens friendly to native wildlife and pollinators, I am giving many tips to on how to start making lifelong difference! I also would like to organize a neighborhood clean up day each month to help clean up litter!

My personal commitment for Earth Day began several years ago and I have joined a program in my city where all the energy for my house comes from renewable resources such as solar and wind energies. I use Cloth bags, recycle everything that I can, conserve my water usage, and try to find everything i can that is earth friendly. I also hope to inspire others to change their lifestyle and contribute to the health of our earth!!

Hi I'm Shannon and I'm 7. I saved my money to purchase a tree for the children's rain forest in Costa Rica just for earth day. I have helped my mom and dad replace old light bulbs in the house with more energy efficient ones (up to 22). I turn off the water and lights when I'm not using them. I put trash in a trash can and don't throw it on the ground. I recycle paper for the local pet store for the gages. And I tell others to take care of the earth.

My personal commitment for earth day may sound small, but it's full of hope that THIS PARTICULAR ACTION will be the start to many efforts in the future. Actions that many will make. Today I'm going to my local grocery store and making a puchase in order to receive a shopping tote in place of using plastic bags. These plastic bags are ruining our enviroment in an extremely dangerous way. I plan to pass the news upon receiving my bag, telling others the small effort they make going and doing the same will mean more and have done more than they can imagine. It's a start, anyway :)

As an educator, I feel it is my duty to help my students understand how they as individuals affect the earth. For Earth Day, my fifth grade class will be completing some Earth Day activities such as word searches, mazes, origami art, and the creation of a paper tree, with a group of first graders. They are our book buddies, and we will be reading a special book by Chris Van Allsburg to them about a young man who realizes how he affects the earth. We will begin the day with a pledge to make a positive difference by helping create a cleaner earth for all. We will also use part of our outside time to make a difference in our own playground. We will pick up trash and leave it better than when we found it. Last but not least, we will create an earth friendly craft out of things we can recycle to make a beautiful reminder of this day. The Earth is our friend, on us it does depend. We must do our part, and love our Earth with our whole HEART!

My husband and I celebrate Earth Day every day in the following ways: we are vegetarians; he has taken the bus to work for decades although the trip is 45 minutes each way; our only car is a Honda Civic (bought used) which I drive only a few days/week on longer errands; we have 5 compost bins, a worm bin, and 14 rain barrels (in Seattle!); we use soaker hoses when we use hoses to water; we garden organically; we don't have a garbage disposal and we recycle diligently (even before the city had curbside pickup); we use CFLs in almost all our light fixtures; we bought an energy-saving washer and refrigerator; my husband has used a push lawnmower (which we got used) for decades (our lawn becomes smaller each year as I convert it to gardens); we use a programmable thermostat to keep the heat down; our cats are indoor-only cats so they don't kill birds; we have lots of bird houses on our city lot; we contribute extra money each month to our electric utility to use for green power; we shop second-hand stores for many items, especially clothing and household goods; we rent out extra space in our house; we stopped at two children; we donate money to environmental organizations; we don't buy bottled water; we have used cloth bags for years when shopping; we eat most foods cooked "from scratch"; we shop at our local farmers market when it is open (and I walk to it unless I am buying heavy or delicate items such as peaches); we've recycled wrapping paper for decades (!) and we gave CFLs and gift certificates to plays and vegetarian restaurants as some of our Yule presents. We are reading Barbara Kingsolver's book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and are trying to buy more locally-grown foods. We are actively working to make our church an official Green Sanctuary, promoting use of washable dishes and utensils for church functions and reducing the use of paper plates and cups--but recycling them into the yard- and food-waste containers when they are used. Still, we use more resources than our fair allotment and we do go hiking which means driving to trailheads. Our next project is solar hot water and perhaps solar electric--even in Seattle.

My plan for Earth Day is really no different than what I do the remainder of the year. No pesticides/herbicides used on my property, which is a wildlife friendly habitat. I will change all my outdoor lights to CFL lighting like I have done indoors. Will get my shallow water feature/bird bath cleaned and ready for summer. I will postpone spring clean up in certain areas of my garden because the birds are still looking for nesting materials. Get another compost pile started...keeps yard debris out of landfills. Invest in a good reel type lawnmower so as not to further pollute the atmosphere.

We have put all our cell phone chargers, camera chargers, battery chargers on a surge protector so that it can be turned off when charging has been completed - the chargers can stop consuming energy when it's not in use. We even put our computers, TV & DVD machine on surge protectors and turn them all off with one/two switch every night. We unplug all countertop appliances and plug them in only when needed. It's also a safety issue. We also vowed to find one new thing to do to help our CO2 and trash production every week.-the family brainstorms and we pick a new idea every friday. It's fun.

For the past 30 years I haven't owned a dryer, air conditioner, dishwasher or lawn mower, and I buy most of my clothes at used clothing stores. When my children were young I used cloth diapers and hung them out on my outdoor wash line. Still use an outdoor wash line - my clothes smell of the sun. I have always lived simply with no clutter because I can "exist" better and happier that way!

Since last week and through the whole month of may I am going green. I am doing lots of yard work and sorting all the garbage into recycling bins. I have gotten in the habit of not leaving lights on and turning off water when I am brushing my teeth. There's a small woodland/marsh area behind my house, owned by my landlords, and I intend to go clean it up so it's safer and more animal friendly. There's a pond that needs cleared of dead limbs and muck, plus a large dump site that at the very least needs condensed. Trash is strewn through out the area as well.

As an educator, I will celebrate Earth Day tomorrow by letting my students have an art activity revolving around saving the earth. I believe that they should be made aware as early as kindergarten that they are part of this world and they can play a role, no matter how small, in saving our planet. I plan to let them make an artwork with some sort of Origami making fishes under the sea to show their commitment in protecting our natural resources, particularly our seas because I am a beach-lover. This may seem insignificant, but I believe that awareness is the first big step in any endeavor for change.

I do not plan to act any different than I otherwise would. All my decisions, EVERY DAY, are environmentally-conscious. 1 day out of 365 days will not make a difference. It HAS to be 365. Earth Day is a misnomer. Our Earth should be respected and celebrated continuously, and used preservatively.

Two (new) things: 1. There is a leaky faucet in the ladies room at work. I've notified management and requested that it be fixed. After a couple months, however, nothing happened. I've decided this morning that enough is too much! I'll be coming to work tomorrow with the tools to fix that faucet! 2. My boyfriend and I have committed to spending more time getting to know our area rather than taking big trips or even local ones that involve heavy consumption. We are walking to local parks, riding our bikes to the (many) national parks in the area, playing outside more. It may be small, but just the awareness of the beauty around us makes us more conscious of our choices.

I have ground and pole bird feeders, flowering bushes and fruit trees, a small home made pool with falls for the frogs, rabbits, one woodchuck and several raccoons that come to drink. I make my compost from last year's fallen leaves, I recycle plastics, I use a bat house with (summe-time) fruit bats as a natural pesticide killer and do not use any chemicals. I do my best to recycle all I can and use low-tox antifreeze and keep my vehicle running properly. I combine trips when running errands and use my hand-cycle as much as I can. I have brought earth day to our school. Last year nothing was done at all!!! I have created a rainforest in the foyer and we are working towards adopting part of the rainforest in Costa Rica. The kids are so excited to make a difference! We are also encouraging the kids to pack a no waste lunch on earth day. We will then carry this into the next school year and have "no waste wednesdays" at our school. Maybe it will be no waste every day. We are also collecting donations for WWF to submit at coinstar! Myself along with our nurse are going to make a compost outside the school to teach kids about waste and resuse!

I walked around my neighborhood with a friend named Melanie and together we asked for donations to WWF for Earth Day. Many of our neighbors through their change into our green WWF bucket. We counted it up and in just three days had 75.00 in change. My mom topped it off with another twenty five giving us a total Earth Day Donation of 100.00. My family continues to recycle and we have been pulling weeds by hand in order to not fertilize our yard. We try to mow as needed instead of every time the neighbors do. We are trying to save fuel by using an electric weed eater and edger. That way, we do not have to start an engine thereby polluting the air. We planted many flowering plants, so that the bugs have nice places to be and we water only when needed. We have planted plants around the yard that we already had growing in other places to make it more shady for the lizards. We love the outdoors and continue to think of all the creatures that live out there too.

It all started one day in January when I was sitting in my Environmental Science class listening to Mrs.Page talking about how if we don't start to care about our Earth all this time would have passed that we could do something about it but if we let it go to long then we won't be able to change anything. So I dedicd to make a change in my everyday activities at first I started out small like just turning off the water when I was brushing my teeth and taking a shorter shower then I worked my way up and started unpluging things we were not using to get my mom to buy the energy saving light bulbs. And now I'm telling my friends that its not that hard and they should do it to. And just to think this all started because of one person.

I teach third grade at Hunter Elementary School in Brownstown, MI. I am the coordinator of our yearly Earth Day project called Earth Day Grocery Bags Project for the whole school. We get a local store to donate bags (Meijer) and we decorate them with Earth Friendly messages. I then take the bags back to Meijer and they bag groceries with them on Earth Day. I also make a huge banner and the whole school signs it. This is our 4th year doing the project. I learned about this project on the Internet at www.earthdaybags.org. It is actually 15 years old. Any teacher can get ont he site to learn how to do this!

My personal commitment for Earth Day 2008 is to really make a difference this year. I have raised 30 dollars to be donated to the National Wildlife Federation in hopes of purchasing grazing privelages to the animals like grizzly bears who need it most. I've also set up a scavenger hunt for my school to participate in on Earth Day to make people more aware of our environment. In addition, I'm in the process of coloring over 100 brown bags to give back to our local A&;P to be given out on April 22. I plan to change our Earth.

We ourselves are learning more about the enviroment and reusable energys, then relaying it to te students around use by activities such as, planting, energy, music, and art. Most of the class will be wearing white shirts with different earth-friendly designs on them. All participants of the assembly get their own booklet to see how they can help at home too. GO EARTH!!

Not Just for Earth Day... every day! I collect the cold water from the tap in a pitcher while I am waiting for it to get hot. It takes over 1 gallon of water to get the hot water to our kitchen sink, 2 quarts to the sink in the master bath. I use the water to water my potted plants. My plants are much happier and I am saving at least 3-4 gallons of water a day.

My husband and I have an Internet Christian Clothing line. We have created a line of T shirts for the youth of the world called "SAVE THEM FOR ME". It is our mission to raise awareness with the adults of the world that it is our moral duty to teach our children to respect the Earth & all of God's creatures, at the same time the T shirts are a visual shock for adults. Imagine seeing a toddler wearing a shirt with a cute and cuddly Baby Polar Bear and the caption reads "SAVE THEM FOR ME".We need to wake up and realise that our resources are not endless and others depend on us. Not only will the animals suffer the consequences, so will our children's children. This needs to be taught to every child. One customer commented that her 7 year old daughter asked "What does endangered mean Mommy?" after receiving her T shirt. They then went online and looked up information and they even found where the animal resides by looking on the Globe. This to me is Fantastic!!!! All any of us can do is to take steps no matter how big or small to make a difference. We are also donating a % of the profits to WWF. I will stop using disposable cups for my morning tea and water at work. Also, Ive been using reusable bags for all my grocery shopping, but I will start using the reusable bags at other merchants like Target, etc. And, Im replacing my old light bulbs with enviro-friendlier bulbs. I teach an elective class at Inman Middle School in Paris, TN about recycling. We already make bookmarks from cereal boxes and donate them to the local public library and our school library. We make puzzles from old magazines. We create games from recyclables, like bowling with Coffeemate containers. I will continue to help my students see the importance of reusing before throwing things into the trash. I will search for new ways topics and ideas and will add a collection container to my classsroom so that we acan begin saving for plant a tree or two in our schoolyard.

I teach grade 6/7 class and I am also enrolled in the Master's program at Simon Fraser University which focuses on ecological environments. What I learn at the university, I teach to my students at their level. Right now my students are building models which use alternate energy such as solar and wind power. Just recently we had a huge debate re: electric car. I am in the process of buying a lawnmower that uses solar battery. Furthermore, we have been studying global warming and how it affects the polar bears. My students wrote opinion papers and responded to numerous newspaper articles. I know they are learning more about the environment than I ever imagined. Zdena Novy

I am heading up an Earth Day Event at my local farmers market and setting up a raffle to raise money for a local charity that helps preserve local farm land. My children are involved and excited about setting up a neighborhood clean up with their school friends.
