Condolences

On Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, WWF received word that a helicopter missing in Nepal was found with no survivors. This tragic event marked the single greatest loss of life in WWF's 45-year history.

WWF has received condolences for this tragic loss from around the globe. Read condolences posted from Sept. 25 through Oct. 3.

The WWF-US condolence board has closed. Post to the WWF-Nepal site.

Jennifer Headley was really the one who opened the door to all of mine and my partner's experiences in Iqaluit, Nunavut. We really felt her love and enthusiasm for the people and place. I feel so grateful to both Jenn and her husband Adam for sharing their home, food, ideas and experiences with us. I wish I could thank Jenn and tell her how strong i think she is,how inspiring, how warm her smile is, how she forever changed our lives, how contagious her passion was, how interesting she was to talk to, how helpful and kind she was to all she met, how much i respected her committment to the people of Nunavut and was glad she was able to travel and explore so much of it. Jennifer Headley was a very special person and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. My prayers go out to Adam, Jenn's family and the folks at WWF. It gives me some solace to know she died doing something she cared so deeply about and believed in. The agreement and work with the people of Nepal is a legacy she will leave and her family can always be proud of. I am also sure she was filled with love because she radiated and lived with so much of it - in her eyes and face you could feel it. thank you jenn for everything - peace and love to all those who knew this amazing woman.

i was shocked to read the tragic loss of lives of multinational conservationists in nepal with the names and pictures of the deceased including a canadian in my local Toronto Star newspaper. as a malaysian canadian, i have first met mingma at a WWF-USA Asian regional conference in malaysia in early 1990s when i was working with WWF Malaysia. we had conversation sitting next to each other on an overland journey. chandra gurung had also presented in malaysia in late 1980s on the Annapurna Conservation Project at an international conference of the Malaysian Nature Society which i was closely associated with. i remet mingma in late l990s at a conservation conference at Cornell University, New York State when i was studying there. 10 years of time have passed, the memories remained. ultimately it seems, nothing is permanent. namaste, frank

Words cannot express the loss I feel to have learnt about the death of these incredible conservationists. I had the honor and privilege to work as Mingma’s assistant for 5 years during my 9 year tenure with WWF-US. It will be hard to imagine WWF without him. He was a dedicated conservationist and very passionate about his work, but never failed to remain true to his roots and values. Mingma was an inspiration to everyone he came into contact with. He was a caring, humble and kind soul and his cheerful demeanor will remain a part of our hearts and minds forever. Mingma was a role model to the entire WWF family and his legacy will live on. Phurba, Dawa and Tenzing, please know my thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this very difficult time. And to the WWF family, may God make it easy for each and everyone of you.

When I came to WWF as an intern in 2005 and 2006 there were a number of people who impacted my life; Mingma is one of the largest reasons that I have chosen to devote my life to conservation. His work and life are a constant inspiration to me. I am very thankful for the short time that I knew Mingma. What he taught me about conservation, dedication, love and kindness will always have a profound impact on the way I live my life. I offer my deepest condolences to the families of all who were involved in this tragedy. My thoughts are with you all.

I am so sorry about the horrible chaos that has just happened. Some people I now say god takes the lives of people for certain reasons. Maybe it was just their time to go. Hopefully everyone can move on and live life to the fullest! I lost a family member too. Actually my dog. It was so unsuspecting. He went missing, and then my aunt called and said he had gotten hit by a car. I thought I could never move on because I loved him so much! But, I did and am happy.

I feel deeply sorry about this tragedy. God has received on his hands the souls of very special human beings who lost their lives trying to salve other lives. Specially because those other lives are of the most needed ones and sometimes the most forgotten: animals. They represent the best of our gender: the really human beings. My love for their families and my prays for the souls of them. God bless them.

About five weeks ago, my daughter and I left our home in Northern California so that I could come to Washington and start a new chapter in my life as part of the WWF family. I briefly met Mingma and but never had the chance to meet Matt. I have been touched by the personal memories and feelings that my new friends and colleagues shared this past week. Their willingness to share has brought me closer to understanding and embracing this personal loss as well as the loss to WWF and the world. Since my first day in this building, I have felt that I am walking among super heroes confronting and conquering greater obstacles and forces than could ever be imagined by the writers of comic books. To the families of Jill Bowling, Chandra Gurung, Harka Gurung, Jennifer Headley, Yeshi Lama, Matthew Preece, and Mingma Norbu Sherpa, your loved ones were super heroes who have raised the bar for all that follow.

Mengma is one of the people that that I consider such a privilege to have met in life -- one who was and always will be an inspiration to be a better person, to work toward that which is most important, and to remain true to one's roots. But from those roots to strive to bloom. Seeing Mingma in the office over so many years, he never failed to strike me as completely dedicated to his work, but never forgetting the human touch of kindness, civility, and a twinkle of cheerful humor in his eyes. His image is engraved in the minds and hearts of all who knew him, and his legacy will remain a part of our Family forever.

It seems like it was yesterday when I helped you getting that couch and huge TV you bought on craigslist. I picked you from metro station and drove to Clarendon... We did a crazy thing... the couch at the lobby of the builing where you bought your couch was in better shape, so we took that one instead of the one you bought... I will never forget that. I remembered how excited you were with your new place. Last time I heard from you was by email on September 12 and you making a promise that we were going to hang out in oct. 1 right when u arrived... I miss you now... but I know you are in better place.

His work in the Terai Arc will continue to be an inspiration to us. His public presentations and interviews during his participation in the Protecting the World’s Mountain Corridors and Peace Parks Conference in the Canadian Rockies were very important to our work. I came to know Mingma la here in Washington, D.C. although I had heard about him and his work on conservation much before. He was a sincere, spiritual person who was an embodiment of humility. He was certainly a role model particularly to those of us from the Himalayas, both side of the border. No matter whether you were a Bhutanese, a Sherpa, a Tibetan, if you had slight interest in the environment and conservation Mingma la was a name that you could not ignore. May deepest condolences to his family and to those of the others who perished in the tragedy.

It is with shock and sadness that Matt's friends here on St. Croix, hear of the tragic news. Our brief time with Matt was too short, and we all admired his commitment and dedication to his work. It is with deep condolences that I offer prayer, love and care to the families of those lost in the Nepal helicopter crash. My heart goes out to all of the families, friends and co-workers of those lost. I worked with Mingma and Matt as their Senior Administrative Assistant and came to appreciate their dedication and commitment to the work they were doing in Nepal and Bhutan. Mingma was WWF in heart and body. He was Mr. Eastern Himalayas with all his strength. I knew Matt for a short time before leaving WWF but I will never forget his sense of humor, his smile. He was so easy to tease. I will always remember him fondly. I also worked with Dr. Chandra Gurung and I admired his fortitude, dedication and commitment to "his" projects. I also briefly communicated with Jennifer Headly whose vitality could be felt through the telephone lines. To all the families of this tragic accident, I offer my sincere condolences as well as my prayers that God will give you strength to go on with your lives in peace.

Yeshi, I'm so sorry for not staying in better contact after our days at Middlebury College and especially while we were both at WWF, one in Nepal and the other in the US. Now, it's too late to properly say, "Hi! How are you doing?" But it's not too late to say that I'll miss you and rue the missed opportunities to reconnect with you. I'll always remember those delicious salad dressings you and Pema created from scratch in the Midd dining halls. Mingma, you never made it out for lunchtime soccer while I was at WWF-US even though you asked to be added to the sooceratlunch list - I have a sneaky suspicion you would have been awesome and left us marveling at your ability on the field, just as you did, unfailingly, every day as a conservationist and as a human being. You always saw the glass as half-full. Chandra, you were always ready with a smile and kind words whenever you visited the DC office. That made a lasting impression on a brand-new Program Officer. I will comfort myself with the knowledge that you and the other 21 brave souls on that helicopter are now in a better place. You touched my life, as well as countless others, human or not, and I thank you for that. My condolences go to the loved ones of everyone on that helicopter, as well as to the WWF family.

The loss to the Himalayan enviromental movement is incalcuable, and to the families and friends a heavy burden. The Fulbright Program in Nepal took special pride in supporting Mingma's outstanding work and we hope perhaps his successors as well. I had heard of Mingma Sherpa’s work in Nepal when I worked for WWF’s Latin America and Caribbean Program in the early 90s and then had the opportunity to meet him briefly some years later and witness his strong, gentle presence. When my husband came downstairs last Saturday and said he'd seen something on BBC about one of 'your guys helicoptors' being lost in Nepal I was just shocked and so saddened, I was hoping against hope but, alas. What a tragedy, for our colleagues' families, the WWF Family, conservation, and the Earth - she lost some of her best allies. My heart goes out to the families, words just are not adequate. I for one, will redouble my commitment to all conservation efforts so that the spirits of our colleagues and friends live on, let us all do so.

Matt and I became friends after he started working at WWF. We'd gotten into the habit of stepping out into town once a week; it was a time for us to have fun together and bond as friends. I haven't been able yet to assess what this loss means to me. His companionship and hunger for life were key in helping me overcome the pain of other recent events in my life. He had a knack for bringing out my playful side. I wish I could repay him for that. I'll miss you much.

While it has been some years since I worked at WWF, this news comes as a profound and stunning blow. Simply by definition of their jobs, many conservationists around the world frequently take risks without question, with optimism and a steady confidence in the value of their work. With this horrible accident, that risk has been realized; there will now be a huge void in the hearts and lives of those who knew, worked with, and loved the victims of this tragedy. One can take some comfort in the knowledge that the important projects in which they were so critically involved will continue, carried out by others with the same spirit and determination. But this loss to WWF, to Nepal, and to conservation is massive and hard to comprehend. With deep sadness, I send my most heartfelt condolences to WWF and to the people of Nepal, to the family and colleagues of all the good people who perished on this trip.

After a breif introduction in a program, he had invited me in his house. I had a plan to go to his home but god never wanted to happen this. Well Migma, you changed the name and fame sherpas in the outer world in a different way and people will never forget you for your work you have done for that region. May your soul rest in peace.

I am just devastated by this news. My heart goes out to the families and wildlife who have lost so much. I did not know any of the individuals in this tragic crash, however, I do know that they cared deeply about wildlife, and that they devoted their lives to conservation. It is a staggering loss to the world of conservation and I can only hope that such a loss can inspire others to step up in their work and dedication to fill the shoes left empty by these fantastic individuals.

My partner and I met Matt two years ago in St. Croix--where he was finishing an assignment. We formed an instant friendship and were both so thrilled to hear that he was re-locating back to Washington, DC. Matt was so full of life, engergy and optimism--traits that inspired us both. He will truly be missed--but I know that his fun-fullied and mischeivous spirit will live on in all of the individuals he touched in his time on this earth.

The news of the loss of so many wonderful people, former colleagues and partners is hard to bear. I knew Mingma quite well and was hoping we would do something together in Bhutan soon. He was a quiet and gentle person, totally dedicated to both conservation needs as well as human welfare. Chandra also, I knew from my frequent visits to KTM. Just when Nepal seems to be coming out of an ethnic conflict, for this to happen taking away so many dedicated and committed people is a loss that will be hard to replace. My deepest condolences to the families of those killed. At this time of grief, they can take comfort in the fact that these dedicated souls will never be forgetten. My thoughts are with all of the family and friends that lost a loved one in this tragic event. I plan on focusing on what Matt wanted to do, for his family, friends, me, for the world. Matt and I were laying in the grass in Astoria Park this summer and telling each other what scared us the most. His was that he didn't want to go before he accomplished everything he wanted to get done. I am sure if you knew Matt you would agree. I would like to set up a fund in his name somehow. I just don't know exactly how to do that at this point and would like the help and ideas of others to fufill this plan. May all we lost, live on in our hearts, our dreams, and our lives.

Last Monday evening I stopped by to Mingma dai's house to see if Tenzing and his aunt had left for Nepal. It was so consoling to find that the house was lit up and one of their Tibetan family friend and neighbour had arranged for a Lama to do 'puja' in the house. This only speaks little of how warm and friendly Mingma dai was. I only met Mingma dai and his family just two years ago when I moved in to Washington but it always felt like we knew one another for so long and now it feels like we met for a very very short time. I hope and pray that the families of the deceased will be able to gather all the strength to face up at this hour of crisis.

It's a very tragic day for the nature lovers worldwide and a sad one for Nepal for they have lost their biggest friends from WWF and the local pioneers of nature conservation in Nepal. The country will feel a rather big void now that the most passionate and the real instigators of nature conservation aren't with us anymore. Let's hope the mission they started will move ahead hand in hand with our friends from WWF and nature lovers world over. Let their souls rest in peace and hope the freinds and families of the victims have strength to take in this great tragedy. The nation is in mourning. God bless them.

So many people have remarked that they can’t believe they’ll never see Mingma’s smile again. That smile. It came from somewhere deep within and shined out through his eyes, spreading across his face until it radiated out and warmed you deep down to your own bones. All that in the flash of a second. And you wanted was to bask in it and, always, to come back for more. Because this came from a wise and good man who walked through the world with joy and commitment and laughter and compassion. I remember a very unhappy man who once spread much misery while believing himself to be wise and speaking often of life being the pursuit of happiness. The dark mirror to Mingma’s bright light. As one of Mingma’s colleagues at WWF said about him once, “Mingma really understands what it’s all about. He just ‘gets it’.” He sure did. Mingma lived a life fueled by passion and sincerity, in pursuit of excellence and lofty goals centered on bettering our world one person and one village and one mountain and one landscape at a time. As a result, he emanated a warmth and sense of purpose – indeed, happiness and wisdom – that inspired and moved so many of us. But he was always too humble to claim it for himself. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with and come to know Mingma during some years that were especially formative and vulnerable for me, professionally and personally. I wish I had told him how significant and inspirational his professional carriage and personal friendship was for me. I’m so grateful to have had that during a time when it mattered so deeply. To Dawa and Tenzing, I hope these many notes add to what I’m sure you must already know: how profoundly your father affected so many lives around the globe. He will continue to live in so many ways through so many people and places for many, many years to come. Forever, I think. I can’t imagine your sorrow at losing him now. I don’t pretend to know how to ease the pain that must come from that kind of loss. But I hope you also feel some comfort and pride from his legacy and inner light that I believe will never stop burning. My condolences to all of the friends and families of Mingma, the charming, singing Chandra, the iconoclastic Harka Gurung, and the other dedicated passengers aboard that helicopter who lost their lives in the course of their work making this world a better place for all of us creatures living in it.

Achu Mingma was the most sherpa among the Sherpas, i.e. humble, genuine, sincere and hardworking. At the same time, he had also taken a relatively non-sherpa path on his career, i.e. instead of guiding other people on the mountains, he pursued education and guided his own people towards the conservation of the culture, the environment and their way of life. He will be missed dearly as the most dedicated and respected Sherpa, and it will be long time, if ever, before this void can be filled. We Sherpas simply lost one of our best own.

Sadly , we have all lost dedicated nature conservationists, I have also lost good friend from "top of the world". I befriended Mingma and Phurba in Winnipeg, where he studied Masters of Nat. Resources at U of Manitoba in early 80's. I had also met him , his mother and brother few times later in Nepal. His death is a loss for Nepal and Sherpas, he was a small but strong man, humble and inteligent, shy but friendly. To Phurba, Dawa and Tenzing : I will remember your husband and dad Mingma forever.

Through knowing WWF's global work through one of your family (Greg Smith), our Computerworld family shares in the tragedy involving your Nepal Team. We are saddened at the loss of those who were working to protect God's gifts and passed in the line of duty most important to them. RIP.

Purba Tenzing and Dawa. Love from the McKinnons. John and Diane are in Tibet doing the Kailash kora with you in mind. Mingma was remembered today in a news item in the local newspaper. But as we all know Mingma was the most three dimensional of people, the written word will only capture a small part of his impact on one and all. From our small corner of the South Pacific to all of you who impacted by this tragic loss, we're thinking of you. dTk

This is such a huge loss to the conservation movement. I am reminded of a quote by Steve Irwin's Dad at his memorial last week. "Please don't mourn for Steve. Mourn for the wildlife that Steve loved so much. They lost their best friend they ever had on this earth." Indeed.

I did not have the privelige of knowing these 7 people, but I will always respect their work around the world. Though miles away, I am so incredibly moved by this terrible incident. I, though not acquainted with them, will always know they must have had the most incredibly beautiful souls & a nobility that could outstand even those most worthy of recognition. I mourn the loss of the families, and I hope they will someday see the light beyond the shadows that seem to make the world look like the hopeless child in the dark. Our world is here so we can live, ...., together.

For the Guides Among Us It must have been raining Because I can still feel the drops on my face It must have been cold Because my heart stands still even now It must have been fast Because it seems like this will go on forever The light, it still shines From deep within My memory of his eyes The aura of his gentleness The warm of his laughter The little prayer with which We greeted each other Each time we met Each day that we did My life was brighter My heart was lighter My hope was stronger Today my prayer is this That I may remember what Is possible With love and kindness With heart and soul With East and West Embodied in us all

I know the loss of seven staff members because of a helicopter crash is tragic, and I know by experience that even coming close to losing someone can get very, very scary, my little brother was three he had lukeimia and barely got through and when he had a stroke I was devistated and thought that he wasn't going to make it out of the hospital to home instead of a graveyard. But now he's seven and safe at home and rarely ever has to go back to that scarey hospital. So whenever I think of the tragic helicopter crash I will pray

I am deeply saddened by this tragic helicopter accident. I worked with these great people in Nepal. I was there at Ghunsa in 2000 and was part of Kanchanjenga Conservation Area Project. They were among a few people who dedicated their lives for biodiversity conservation. It is big loss for WWF, Nepal, and world's conservation movement. My thoughts are with their families, friends, and colleagues at this difficult time.

How very, very sad for the whole world to have 'lost' so many so very dedicated special friends of the earth. The tears keep coming and I feel so close to all those families who have lost their loved ones. We all share in their loss. -- May we all become more dedicated to saving our planet and the precious wildlife on it. --- We will never forget these wonderful people.

Fallen friends and colleagues –Each of you holds a special place in our hearts. Your loss will inspire us to continue working for a world where people and nature can co-exist in harmony. “Better not be at all than not be noble”, said Tennyson. Your nobility is reflected in your beliefs, actions, and passion. We thank you and will cherish your memory.

I think of all the people in the organization who could have also been on that flight and how happy each of them were for the Nepal and other WWF staff who had worked so hard to keep the program moving despite the challenges on the ground. As a person who only knew Matt and Mingma in passing, I even knew Matt was so excited to finally go to Nepal and see the project that he had been working on during late nights and even longer meetings and conference calls. We encouraged him to try everything and tell us all about it. Mingma had such a great and humble spirit that was evident even during short conversations for coffee and commiserations while each of us forgot our work Id's. I think of each member of their family and everyone else on that flight and understand the personal loss that comes when someone is taken too quick. All around the world, we as a community are mourning extraordinary people who were committed to doing something they found noble and rewarding.

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I have not lived.” Mingma, it was our honor to know you. You will live in our hearts, and in our children’s hearts. And we know you will continue to watch, smile, nod, and coach us, from behind the veil.

This tragedy reminds us that we can never take for granted what life gives us. For us at WWF, that gift is an opportunity to accomplish our vital conservation mission. Our dear colleagues went in harm’s way to advance that cause. We must offer our redoubled efforts to honor their legacy. We remember their hope and their good spirit.

I write to you from the first leg of a 37 hour trip from Dulles to Los Angeles to Bangkok to Kathmandu. United 221 left Dulles with four last-minute passengers: Ginette Hemley, Tenzing Sherpa (Mingma's son), Chering Sherpa (Mingma's sister-in-law) and me. It is remarkable we made the flight. United cancelled the 6pm flight that we were scheduled on; we rushed to the airport and were dropped into a sea of endless lines to practice our pleading and cajoling skills to get onto an earlier flight. Mingma's extended family had arrived early at Dulles and were waiting for us. They were 10 people strong with cousins and uncles, including one truly imposing family friend, who is a Buddhist monk, in his saffron robe - all accompanied by Guillermo and Kathryn Fuller, who came to help out. While waiting to get our tickets, Mingma's son Tenzing, stoic, broad shouldered, twenty something sophomore at Virginia Commonwealth University, looks up under thick black bangs with all too familiar eyebrows and expressions and said, "I'm worried about the two of you-will you make the flight?" Imagine sitting in his place and worrying about others. I've seen few young men carry themselves with so much assurance and grace under so much adversity. Our flight was called and after tearful goodbyes, we vaulted to the front of a winding security line and then on to the plane. Once on, I called Sir Edmund Hillary in New Zealand, who had adopted Mingma when he was orphaned as a teenager, and connected the 87 year-old icon with Tenzing. I could hear one side of this conversation between the remarkable young man who is Mingma's son and the older statesman as they talked about our lost friend, connecting across the Pacific and across the ages of Mingma's life. I feel privileged to be where I am escorting the son of our colleague, an astonishing man who we count as a hero and a friend - to Kathmandu, where heartache and the loving embrace of his family, our office and the Himalayas await.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of seven WWF staff members along with important partners in our conservation work who appear to have died in a helicopter crash in Nepal.
